Transforming at 60: Irene's Journey from Being “Sluggish” to Strong with TSquared Lab.

What is your name, age, and profession?

I am Irene, I am 60 years old and I am a general manager.

What made you sign up for the TSquared Lab program?

I have actually been working out for several years, but since I hit menopause a few years back, I stopped and when I started back again, it was tough to achieve the goals that I wanted, and that’s when I figured that, I probably need to do some personal training and that’s when I discovered TSquared Lab. They are just 5-10 minutes down the road from where I am so that’s no excuse right? And I really wanted to achieve my goals, and I needed to be committed so it was TSquared Lab from the beginning.

What were the main challenges or struggles you had with regards to your health and or your fitness before starting at TSquared Lab Program?

My body wasn’t what I wanted it to be. So I was sluggish, and didn’t feel very energetic and I wanted to change all that and feel good again so that was one of my goals.

So, Nurwana, when you first noticed Irene’s difficulties, how did you structure her training program?

Nurwana: So, for her, we started really slow at first. So we started focusing on the form at first, and slowly I think we increased the weights and increased the reps and you got better. I think your best was your shoulder presses, you started with 3 kilos and you said that’s all you did, and I am like, “Now we can go more.” So, now she is shoulder pressing 8 kilos so she is very strong from where she started.

Irene: Yeah, and it was really great. That's what I liked about this program when I first started. Nurwana started slow which is great because I haven’t been working out in a long time but then she really built the intensity and challenged me so, I think that was great and you know she made sure that I was always in proper form while doing all those exercises which is good, and the great nutritional advice which she has given me, I think it’s so important it helped me be a bit more mindful about my food intake and that helped a lot. And what was great was that the diet was not regimental right? It was not like a strict diet that I had to adhere to so it’s just about being mindful of how many carbohydrates you need to intake.

It’s not about not eating, not having desserts or cutting out all carbs, cutting out all sweets. I think you need to balance it out, and I think that’s what is best about it. If it was a strict regimental diet I don’t think I would have been able to sustain or it would have been sustainable for me personally.

Nurwana: So, she is a big fan of desserts, she cannot live without them. So, I try not to completely cut that out because I know that’s what makes her happy, and I know that if I completely cut that out she will be grumpy. So, I told her once in a while you can go and have it, don't have it all the time but don’t completely cut it out either. I do have to keep a check sometimes, like this one time she was craving for Nasi Padang and I told her, “Maybe this weekend you can go get a Nasi Padang.” I am still not sure if she had it or not.

Irene: I did, and she made sure that I worked out harder the next time I saw her.

Nurwana: Yeah, you want to eat more, you got to train hard.

How much weight and body fat have you lost so far?

Irene: When I started out, my weight was 54 kgs, and right now it’s 47 kgs, and my body fat was 25% and now it has come down to 17%.

Nurwana: So, she has lost a lot, and I am very proud of where she has been till now.

Irene: Yeah, and Nurwana has been great. I really want to thank her for being on this journey with me because, I have felt that my body definitely feels stronger, definitely leaner and I have never felt so good about myself for a very very long time. So, she has really helped me achieve my goals. So it’s really thanks to her and to TSquared Lab.

What is your proudest achievement so far?

I was all up for the challenge, and what really kind of motivated me you know, and also for Nurwana to challenge and motivate is, when you see your transformation right? Like, I joined TSquared Lab in August last year and then, to see a transformation before August like before one year, to me, that was a great achievement. It has helped me keep going and for Nurwana to challenge me.

How would you describe the program that your coach has designed for you?

I think the program that Nurwana has designed for me is great. She has been really thoughtful. Having not worked out, when I first started, she built the intensity very gradually and I think that’s what I liked about it. She didn’t force me, she made sure that I was able to take on the challenge before she increased the intensity and I also really liked the nutritional advice that she has given me as well. The food intake is also really important to my whole health and fitness journey and Nurwana has been great with all that.

How has your coach helped you along the journey?

Making sure that I turn up for all my workouts, making sure that I give my all during the workouts and always making sure that I am mindful about what I eat on a daily basis and challenging me and pushing me all the time.

Any words for the gym and its people?

Having been here for like 6 months at TSquared Lab, I think the people here are really, really friendly, the staff here is really, really friendly and I really like the environment here. It is not intimidating, which was really important for me, because some gyms I really find intimidating but this is not and I really like the vibe here.

What would you say to someone who is unsure of joining TSquared Lab?

I would ask them to seriously try TSquared Lab, and they can be sure that they will have a program that is catered to you and they will make sure that you achieve your goals and you are going to feel great about yourself.

Any final words before we sign off?

Irene: Nurwana, I really want to thank you for being with me on this journey. For challenging me, for pushing me, and being so patient with me as well and for making me achieve my goals which I think was the most important thing, and for making me feel so great about myself. I haven’t felt this way for a very long time.

Nurwana: “I am so proud of you.” From where she started, to now it's an immense change. So I am extremely proud of her. She has grown so strong and to me, it is like a big achievement as a trainer to get her from where she was to where she is now. It is amazing.

Irene was aware her body wasn’t how she wanted it to be and the main reason for that was that she wasn’t working out for several years. Having understood her challenges, and the goals that she wanted to achieve she decided to join TSquared Lab.

Irene had been working out for several years before she hit menopause. After being inconsistent for some time when she joined TSquared Lab, she started being consistent again and was ready for every challenge that her trainer gave her.

Irene was always thankful to her coach Nurwana for her support and guidance which helped her achieve the desired results. The proper form, the gradual progress with the program and the nutritional guidance that she got from her trainer helped her to see visible changes in a few months.
