In 2021 our client Sarah discovered the art of pole dancing- a discipline that requires a harmonious blend of strength, grace, and creativity. What started as a hobby soon became a passion, driving her to push the limits of her body and mind. However, like all great endeavors, her path wasn’t without its hurdles.
Sarah’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Over the years, her active childhood had left her with some injuries, including a problematic right shoulder. “The pain wasn’t just a muscle ache it was this grinding sensation, like bone on bone. It was holding me back in my training, especially when trying to push into more advanced tricks,” she explained. Even day-to-day activities like turning her head had become difficult, further impacting her life and her dance.
Thankfully, an opportunity presented itself when her studio boss introduced Nick, a physiotherapist known for his work with athletes. “I met Nick when he offered to treat all the teachers at our studio. It was perfect timing!”
Sarah admitted she wasn’t overly hopeful at first. “I’d seen a lot of physiotherapists before Nick and felt like I’d heard it all,” she confessed. But her first session with Nick was different. “He really listened. He didn’t just give me cookie-cutter exercises. Instead, he looked at my entire body’s movement and designed a plan that worked holistically,” Sarah said.
Nick explained her condition in clear terms: “When I saw Sarah, she had reduced neck range of motion, pain with shoulder flexion, and instability. The challenge with treating dancers like Sarah is their extreme range of motion, so it’s critical to identify which muscles aren’t firing and which joints are too mobile.”
Sarah recalled how the first few weeks of following Nick’s tailored rehab plan felt uncertain, but soon the results became undeniable. “After two or three weeks, I messaged him to say, ‘I feel so much better!’ The impingement was gone, and I could finally progress.”

Sarah had multiple long-term injuries from childhood, particularly in her right shoulder, which became more pronounced as she trained harder.
Sarah’s success was based on consistent, whole-body rehabilitation and progressive overload to restore balance and flexibility.

With her shoulder no longer holding her back, Sarah’s training took off. “I send Nick photos all the time of my progress,” she grinned. “A couple of years ago, I could barely do my splits with three blocks under me. Now, I’m at five blocks- and with a backbend!” Sarah’s newfound stability allowed her to push her body further than she ever imagined. “The best part is that I’m stretching healthily and functionally now. I feel connected, strong, and pain-free.”
Nick emphasised the importance of a gradual, progressive approach: “Sarah’s dedication is incredible. Progressive overload- pushing a little further each time without overstressing, is the key to her success.”
Sarah was effusive in her praise for Nick. “I’ve already recommended him to so many of my friends. He takes you seriously, whether you’re a professional athlete or just someone passionate about your hobby. No one should have to accept pain or limitations as normal,” she said.
She also highlighted his professionalism: “As a woman, I don’t always feel comfortable with male physiotherapists, but Nick was so respectful from the start. He always checked in- ‘Is it okay if I needle here?’ and made sure I felt comfortable every step of the way.”
Sarah’s journey is a testament to resilience, the importance of finding the right support, and the incredible things the body can achieve with proper care.
